Must See Horror Movies

I am a die hard Horror movie lover, I have been for as long as I could remember. When I was a child I remember sitting in my bedroom watching The Thing. I lived for horror back then and I still do today. That is why I decided to comprise a lists of what I think are the best horror movies ever. I measured the movies based on their success, creepiness, gore, popularity, and interviews with others. Here is a list of my favorite must see horror movies.

SCREAM. The movie that put slasher flicks back on the map and proved that the world was ready for horror again. The movie featured a creepy killer who called his victims to taunt them before brutally executing them while wearing a ghost face costume. It was a movie that managed to combine horror and comedy effectively. It was bloody, cool, funny and all around kick ass. It was critically acclaimed as well as, successful at the boxoffice. When it was released in 1996 it broke records, becoming one of the highest grossed horror movies of all times. When a movie is this successful sequels will follow, Scream 2 was released in 1997, Scream 3 in the year 2000 and Scream 4 in 2011. Scream also won the award for best picture by from The International Horror Guild.

THE LOST BOYS. This movie is PG13 compared to many of the others on this lists. However, it is one of my favorite horror movies, if not one of my favorite movies of all times. This vampire thriller kept you on the edge of your seat. Like scream it successfully combined horror, comedy and even mystery. It was well written, well received and a box-office success. It's cast became instant stars after the movie's release in 1987. It is also attributed to inspiring other vampire thrillers including, Near Dark and Fright Night. In addition, the vampires in this movie were much cooler and scarier then the ones featured in modern vampire movies like, Twilight . This film was so successful that I bet if it was digitally remastered and re-released it would still find box-office success today.

SE7EN. When Brad Pit and Morgan Freeman are the stars of a movie, you know it will be a success. These are celebrities that even your grandmother would love however, this is not your grandmas movie. This film is about a serial killer who murdered or forced people to murder themselves in horrifying ways. He targeted people based on the Seven Deadly Sins, gluttony, greed, envy, sloth, pride, wrafth, and lust. The killings in this movie are absolutely shocking and disturbing. What is more shocking, is the intense unexpected climax. Lets just say, do not expect a happy ending on this one. When the movie was released in 1995 it became a box-office success earning 327 million worldwide. It was also well received by critics and audiences.

THE THING. Unlike the other films on this list, The Thing did not do as well as expected at the box-office. Nevertheless, it was a dam good horror movie. It is about Alien intruders such as the ones in Puppet Masters and Body Snatchers, only cooler. These uninvited guess invades your body without your permission. The movie had assume special effects especially for its time in 1981. Humans transformed into Aliens, heads detached from bodies, human stomachs opened up into huge months, and so on. Although, it was not a box-office success it went on to gain a cult following after it was released on home video. In fact, just last year a prequeal to The Thing dabued in theaters.

NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET. What made the original Nightmare on Elm Street so great is that it was truly an original idea. There was not another movie quite like it. It played on our fear of being vulnerable when we are asleep. It introduced the world to Freddy Krueger a psychopathic child killer who stalked and killed you in your sleep. Krueger had a grudge to settle because he was torched to death by Elm Street's parents. Therefore, he started to murder their children as they slept. When the movie was released in theaters in 1984, it went on to be a box-office success. It also went on to gain a cult following and it produced 8 sequels as well as, a remake in 2010.

Cojo

CUJO. If you are afraid of dogs like me, Cujo will scare the sh*t out of you. Nearly the whole movies takes place in a car where mother and son are trapped due to what awaits them outside. Cujo is waiting out side, a massive St. Bernard dog with rabies. Cujo has already murdered its owner and every time the mother tries to steps out of her broken down car, she is attacked by the huge dog. The film was released in 1983 and like The Mist it is based on a Stephen King novel. The movie became successful through the years and as recently as 2006 was featured on Bravo's 100 Scariest Movie Moments.

FEAR. Imagine finding out that the man that you thought was perfect and fell madly in love with is a psychopath. Well that is exactly what happens in this movie. It follows a young girl who is completely mesmerized by a handsome, charming young man. Blinded by love, she could not imagine that he become a sick, obsessed stalker who would attempt to murder her whole family. What makes this movie so scary is, the monster is someone that you know, trust, share your bed and most intimate secrets with. Fear had moderate box-office success when it was released in 2006. However, through the years it has gained recognition for being a great horror movie. In fact, it was featured on Bravo's 100 scariest Movie Moments and 30 Even More Scarier movie moments. I think that Fear is one of the best stalker movies of all times.

THE HILLS HAVE EYES, REMAKE. Warning if you do not enjoy blood, guts, gore, horrific murders, mutated people and down right disturbing movies, then you might want to stay away from this one. Since, this is exactly what The Hills Have Eyes remake delivers. The film follows a vacationing American family as they travel to California. However, they get lost, stop at a gas station and receive directions into hell. Nearly the entire family are brutally murdered by mutated humans who live in the dessert. The movie was a huge commercial success when it was released in 2006. In earned 69, 770, 032 at the box office and soon The Hills Have Eyes 2 was released in theaters. The film was a big hit with audiences nonetheless, critics had mixed reviews of the movie. They said that the film was "Faster paced for today's audiences, The Hills remake ratchets up the gore for hardcore horror fans, but will turn away casual audiences." I have to say that I agree with this assessment.

THE RUINS. This movie does not always get the credit that I believe it deserves, it follows the journey of two young couples vacationing in Mexico. The couples becomes board with the local tourist attractions and decides to venture out in order to explore ancient Mayan temples. That would turn out to be the biggest mistake of their lives. This film is simply disturbing as you witness these young people's nightmare begin. Their journey goes from bad, to worst, to just f**cking depressing. Your heart goes out to these young adults who are being quarantined on a Mayan temple by local villagers, until they die . It gets worst, turns out that they are not alone, they are accompanied by killer plants who invades your body and eats you alive. The movie was released in 2008 and initially was not considered a box-office success. However, the movie did make back the money that cost to create it in its opening weekend. Therefore, it it was not a failure.

HALLOWEEN 2007. There is no doubt that the original Halloween is a classic however, I prefer the remake. The Halloween remake provides a more in dept account of who Micheal Myers was, where he was from and why he was so terrifying. It follows him as a child, as he tortured animals, beat people to death and brutally murders nearly his whole family. As an adult Micheal Myers begins his quest to find his last living relative. Once he finds his little sister, he is rejected which turned him into more of a monster. The remake is way more graphic, bloody, and shocking then the original. It was released in 2007 to mixed reviews however, it was a box-office success

ORPHAN. I remember watching the trailer for this movie, a couple adopts a child who is not who she appears to be. It looked good however, I figured it would be a PG 13 drama. I could not have been more wrong. Orphan was shocking, the whole movie made you feel uncomfortable because you were afraid of what this girl would do next. Just when you thought they would not go there, they went all the way there. Ester, the adopted child, committed brutal murders, terrified the other children in the house and attempted to seduce her adopted dad. This movie had balls bigger then the Titanic however, it never sunk. It was entertaining from beginning to end. When the movie was released in 2009, it received mixed reviews from critics. Nevertheless, the film is now highly recognized as a great horror movie with a talented young actress. In fact, it was featured on Chiller's 13 list as one of the most terrifying movies of the decade.

THE DEVILS REJECTS. This movie is sick, disturbing, twisted, insane and that is just the way I like it. The Devils Rejects is the only sequel on this list because I believe that it far surpasses the original, House of 1000 corpses. This movie follows a family full of psychopaths who attempt to escape prosecution for torturing and murdering innocent victims. This is one of those rear films where the main characters of the movie are the psychotic killers. Therefore, it makes you feel torn, you do know whether you should route for the killers or not. The movie was released in 2005 and it has gone on the gain cult following. It was also featured on Bravo's 100 scariest Movie Moments and 30 Even More Scarier movie moments.

HOSTEL. I remember watching Hostel thinking, this such a guys movie. It was filed with sex scenes and vulgar language. However, before the film was done i knew it was force to be reckoned with. Hostel followed three young college grads who were back packing in Europe. The young men rented a room in a Hostel in order to increase their chances of hooking up with hot women. These guys had no idea that they just walked into nightmare. By the time the movie ended only one of these young men would be alive. The others met an untimely, horrific, torturous, gruesome death. This movie definitely deserves credit for being original. You have never seen another movie quite like this. The monsters in this movies, does not have horns, or a demon like appearance. No, the monsters in this movie looked just like you and me which made it more terrifying. Hostel was released in 2006, it cost an estimated 4.8 million dollars to make. Despite its small budget, it earned over 80 million dollars worldwide. It was also featured on Chiller's 13 best horror movies of the decade list as well as, taking the top spot on Bravo's 100 scariest Movie Moments and 30 Even More Scarier movie moments.

THE GRUDGE. I have only three words to describe this movie "scary as hell". Many people have watched The Grudge and has said that they did not find it be scary. I would challenge those to, go home, when you are alone, turn off all of the lights and put the Grudge in your DVD player. I bet, you will not be able to make it through the whole movie without turning the lights back on. This freaky Japanese remake is about a family who was brutally murdered. Since, they died under such horrific circumstances, their spirits refused to leave the home. Subsequently, any one who entered the home became cursed by these evil spirits. When the film was released in 1996 it terrified audiences, fascinated critics and topped box-offices. In fact, it was one of the first horror movies to top Halloweens success in years. Of course, when a movie sees this much success there will be more movies like it to follow. Therefore, The Grudge had two sequels, however, they were not as successful or terrifying as the original.

PARANORMAL ACTIVITY. I, myself did not find this film to be all that scary however, I would not watch it alone. This film followed a young couple who shared a beautiful home however, unannounced to them, they were not alone. The young woman was being stalked by a supernatural being, evil spirit or ghost. When this movie was released in 2007 it scared people half to to death. Movie goers left the theaters in tears, could not sleep at night and were partially traumatized as a result of this movie. What is so fascinating about this film is, it did not have intense action sequences, blood, gore or feather horrifying murder scenes. It scared people with simple sounds of footsteps, noises and a clock at the bottom of the screen. This film cost little to nothing to make yet it has become one of the most profitable movies ever made. It earned 194 million worldwide and was purchased by Dreamworks 350,000. These numbers doesn't seem like much compared to other Hollywood Blockbusters. Nevertheless, when you compare the cost of making this film to the amount that it has earned, it is indeed extremely successful. Two sequels were also made due to the success of the film. It also came close to grabbing the top spot on Chiller's 13 Scariest Movies of The Decade

THE MIST. This is an assume film about small town, everyday folks who encountered beings from another dimension. These beings entered our universe through an unusual mist. Nearly the whole movie takes place in a supermarket. Where people are terrified to leave due to whatever awaits them in the mist. I know, It sounds like some freaky Science Fiction film gone wrong but I assure you that it is not. This movie is based on a book by the master of suspense Stephen King. It keeps you on the edge of your seat, with intence action scenes, gruesome deaths and suspense. When this movie was released in 2007 it became a commercial success. Audiences loved it, critics liked it, it was even featured on Chiller's 13 Scariest Movies of The Decade, coming close to the top spot as one of the most terrifying movies of the decade.

Lorna The Exorcist DVD Lorna The Exorcist DVD

THE EXORCIST. I was not there to see it but I have been told that this film made movie goers afriad to sleep at night. This film was about a demon possessed 12 year old girl who terrified anyone that she came into contact with. Whats is remarkable about this film is, it did not have a high body count and it was not a blood bath, nevertheless, it traumatized anyone who watched it. When it was released in 1973 movie goers were not used to raw, uncensored, rated R horror but that is exactly what the Exorcist gave them. Over time It has become one of the most successful movies of all times earning $441 million worldwide. The Exorcist went on to have 3 sequel as well as, a re-release in the year 2000. It was also featured on Bravo 100 Scariest Movie Moments.

The Ring

THE RING. Horror was dead in 2002, movie goers lost interest in horror, and Hollywood was not delivering any high quality horror films, then The Ring came along. This Japanese horror remake was about a creepy little girl who killed people 7 days after they watched a strange video tape. The film tricked audiences into believing that this poor helpless child was just reaching out for help through a tape. However, in the end you find out that the girl is not helpless, she is just down right evil and pissed off. The movie was mysterious and it left a lot to the imagination which only added to its creepiness. It was terrifying, disturbing and scared the hell out of people. It managed to accomplish this, without a lot of special effects, action scenes, blood or gore. The Ring was a huge box office success, it earned 249, 348, 933 worldwide. Fans and critics all agreed that the ring was one of the best horror movies of all times. Recently, it was featured on Bravo's 100 scariest Movie Moments and 30 Even More Scarier movie moments. It also grabbed the top spot on Chiller's 13 Scariest Movies of The Decade. Proven that it is indeed one of the most successful and terrifying movies of all times.

THE DESCENT. This is hands down my favorite horror movie of all times. The film was totally underrated therefore, when I begin to watch it, I was not expecting much. However, I quickly realized that this movie was going to be a classic. It follows a trill seeking all female cast as they explored an undiscovered cave. There were warning signs that something was not quite right about the cave from the beginning nonetheless, they ignored them. Soon they became trapped in the cave and as you watched you start to feel an overwhelming feeling of hopelessness for the women. As if being trapped in a dark, dreary cave was not bad enough, they soon discover that they are not alone. Turns out that there were others down there with them. At first they appeared to be human but soon they realized that they were highly evolved humans who adapted to living in a dark cave. This movie is great horror, action, suspenseful thriller that deserves credit for not only being a great horror movie but for being a good movie, period. What is also great about the film is it featured an all female cast who 's breast weren't hanging out the whole movie. The movie was originally released in the UK in 2005 and in America in 2006. It earned an estimated 57,051,053 worldwide it was also featured on Chiller's 13 Scariest Movies of The Decade.

These are some of the best horror movies ever made however, I am sure that I left some out. So, I am asking you to please leave a comment about what your favorite horror movie is and why. I will expand this list to include your movie as your comments roll in.

this is an awesome and excellent list! i am also a horror movie fan, although i haven't seen anything too good lately. The Devil's Rejects and House of a 1000 corpses were crazy films, Rob Zombie is a pretty talented guy. Although Wes Craven's movie are a stable in the industry, I agree Scream rejuvinated the slasher films. voted up, interesting, awesome and sharing on twitter!
