Is It Worth The Risk

From Graduate School to Prostitution, it can Happen To You

From the looks of it, this story may seem like an attempt to promote prostitution or to sell sex of some kind but I assure you that things are not as they appear to be, at least in this case. This story is tale of survival and the difficult decisions that hard working Americans have been forced to make due to this horrible economy. Let me explain, a little over a year ago there was a women who was a hard working underpaid American like so many of you. She was also a student perusing the American dream as she started a graduate degree program. Soon after, she lost her job but received unemployment benefits and she knew that would soon have a Masters Degree. Therefore, she was saddened but was not depressed because she was looking forward to the bright future that was ahead, so she thought. She had also begin to write a business plan for a family business that she co-founded thus, she was not the least bit worried about her future. To move things forward, it has 6 months since she completed the Masters Degree program and the business plan. Unfortunately, the business did not receive the grant that she requested. Disappointed, however she had over 10 years of work experience in her field and a prestigious Masters Degree so, she started applying for jobs. Nonetheless, there were no call backs and at this point she was really struggling to pay her bills. She had no choice but to decide weather to pay a bill or go food shopping.

Surviving

The Hardest Decision of Her Life

Not being able to make ends meet, facing foreclose, forced to file bankruptcy, cant find a job and now twenty thousand dollars in debt from student loans, she begin to research ways to make money online. That is when she came across a website that freely promoted prostitution under the name "Escort". She turned away from it, saying to herself "This is not me, I could never do that". Six months later, her situation had not changed. She was hungry and up to my neck in bills. That's when she decided to take another look at that website. So, she said to herself, let me post an add and lets see what happens? What happen was, the money came fast, she was finally able to pay her bills and go food shopping. Happy ending right? except she was constantly living in fear of going to jail, constantly in fear of meeting a Craigslist killer, or being exposed to HIV and other STD's. The point is this, how is it possible that we live in a society where you can work hard enough to earn a Masters Degree but still have to resort to prostitution? How can they tell us that engaging in these types of activities are wrong and illegal without offering any other alternatives? If this young women were to become homeless today, society would also look down on her as a freeloader, a beggar or a loser. So you be the judge, in this situation what is right or wrong? What is moral or immoral? At this point, the women's future remains uncertain, she still has not found a job and is considering remaining a prostitute. This is simple an attempt to bring awareness to the reality of the economic crisis that we as Americans are facing today. So as you read this article remain objective and show it to others in order to give them insight on the reality of our country. What an injustice, a person with a graduate degree has to resort to prostitution. Many of you will say, I would never do that, she is just a whore but I ask you to think again because you never know what you would do to survive. You could be just like this young women, never say never.

There is nothing more powerful than hunger and some people don't qualify for help. No one would choose prostitution if there was another alternative.

Hello you are totally entitled to your opinion but I think that you live on the other side of the world where you don't understand true poverty. You don't understand the threat of homelessness and don't understand what it feels like to be hungry and therefore, don't understand this hub. Yes some people really cant find a job, yes some people don't know how they are going to eat tomorrow, or how they are going to feed there children. If you think that this is unreasonable then I suggest you visit the south Bronx, NY on your vacation lets see what you think after that.

I'm not buying into this... That lady should have lived within her means and found a regular job, regardless if it met her higher-than-usual expectations of a pay rate. In due time, maybe her Masters Degree could have landed her something better.

I don't know what part of the country she is from, but a person can get a job of some sorts, outside of prostitution. Now, if you have an expensive drug habit or a high cost of living, then yeah, some gals may need to prostitute their self to compensate for lower wages, but that's left out of the story along with other things like why this girl needed premium rates of income besides paying back a few student loans.

Anyway, Welfare benefits are very abundant in the U.S., so if she has kids while earning a low income or whatever, she'll still be rewarded with free funds.

Don't get me wrong, I think prostitution should be taxed and legalized abroad, but I'm not falling for the poor little lady story that says "I'm a total prostitute solely because of a poor economy" baloney.

Economics now relate to being a whore?

That sounds like a wonderful excuse for many, but it is a sorry excuse, in my opinion.

Then again, its your life, so to each their own, I suppose.

Thanks for sharing such a provocative, interesting Hub... :D

Your comment is both deep and interesting, I hope that we as a Americans address this problem soon or there will be an increase of prostitution, drug dealing, robbery and so on because at the end of the day people are going to do whatever it takes to survive, pay their bills and feed their children.

Well done for addressing this realistically and honestly. Until recently, for a young woman in a Western society to enter prostitution, there was usually a sad root cause, typically a drug habit or a history of abuse. For most others, there was always a clear path to follow through society leading to personal betterment without taking that step. In UK and Western Europe (though less so in US) the welfare state provided a safety net that ensured basic subsistence at least.

Recent years have seen this eroded, some would say deliberately destroyed, by greed and gross inequality in society, pushing the middle classes and especially students and younger people into ever more hopeless situations.

We are becoming ever more like the Eastern European, former Soviet and some traditional Asian societies where still the only reliable way forward for a girl is to make a good marriage. The Middle East is full of 'working girls' from these countries all with the same story: divorced or abandoned, child to support, no state welfare, no alternatives left. It is a disgrace that we in the West are so casually letting slip all that was best, and sliding back to third world norms.

It is no shame on the girls themselves.

Hello, China Doll,

This is a useful, awesome, beautiful and very interesting article.

I certainly can identify with the young woman's situation.

In fact, because of discrimination and other forms of racism, I have been living in a recession for nearly my entire life. Nowadays, things are much better for black people -- but back in the day when I was young, there was always a shortage of jobs for black workers, whether the national economy was in good shape or bad shape.

So far as the young woman, I believe that she should do something like take a job as a security guard, as a clerk in a business like Duane Reade, as a worker in a fast-food restaurant, or some other so-called minial job. And if necessary, she should work two of those kinds of jobs at the same time (for much of my life, I worked two full-time jobs at the same time).

The possibility of her contracting HIV/AIDS, alone, should prompt her to stop working as an "escort."
